We are all global citizens now. Is that a good thing? What does it actually mean? Can we remain loyal to our local communities while embracing a global identity? Is there a risk of losing our unique cultural identities in the process?

We may know what ‘experts’ think about these questions, but what do ordinary people around the world think? We are asking them to tell us. In the week before World Values Day hundreds of ordinary people from a wide range of countries will give their considered thoughts on global citizenship from their own very different points of view.

Through short speeches and open discussions, streamed live to social media and recorded for posterity, speakers will share their thoughts, experiences, and concerns. From bustling cities to remote villages, from diverse cultures to different generations, these discussions will provide a platform for real-world perspectives on what it truly means to be a global citizen today. These “soundings from the Global Village” will bring the world’s real voices into the conversation about our individual and collective identity in this interconnected and fast-changing world.

At this event on World Values Day, we are going to review what we have seen and heard from our Global Village over the preceding week. We don’t quite know where the conversation will lead but we are sure that those unexpected voices will inspire us with many unexpected insights.

Whether you have participated in the preceding week’s discussions or not, please join us for this fascinating conversation.

This is a collaborative event between World Speech Day and World Values Day. We hope that it will be the start of a series of “Soundings from the Global Village” events and activities addressing different issues of common global interest. In a world that is increasingly interconnected, voices from every corner of the globe are more important than ever. As we grapple with the challenges and opportunities of our time, it is not just the experts and leaders who should be heard, but also the everyday voices that make up the fabric of our global society. This is why we are launching this series of open discussions featuring the world’s unexpected voices—ordinary people with extraordinary insights, many of whom have contributed to World Speech Day in the past.
