Living Values Education: Parenting Guide — A premise of Living Values Education is that when we treat people in such a way that they feel loved, valued, respected, understood and safe, they grow toward their potential. This parenting guide takes that seemly undoable premise and makes it real. This is particularly so for the way we treat children it sets the environment for their whole lives.
Diane Tillman shares stories from her vast experience as well as research to illustrate the importance of Us Time and play, and guidelines on encouragement, active listening, discipline, developing responsibility and more while dealing with everyday realities such as homework, the “I hate you” syndrome and how to get children to handle squabbles respectfully and independently.
Suggestions and activities are shared to help parents help children, from toddlers to teens, use values to handle their challenges as well as to deal with the concerns of bullying and social media. Chapters on balanced family life in regard to screen time, preventing sexual abuse and drug use, rebuilding relationships that appear broken and taking care of yourself are also included.
Three bonus chapters offer ideas for exploring the values of peace, love and respect. This book is unusual not only for the variety of important topics addressed, but for its values-based approach in building healthy emotional and social skills, resilience, wellbeing and gratitude — for both parents and children — while strengthening loving family relationships.
